Man pulled underwater by strong Green River currents dies

Near KANASKAT-PALMER STATE PARK, Washington — A 19-year-old man who was pulled from the Green River near Kanaskat-Palmer State Park on Monday has died, a Harborview Medical Center representative said on Tuesday.

The man had recently graduated from high school, and had gone to the park with his father and their two dogs, the King County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff Spokesperson Cindi West tells KIRO 7 that the man waded in, but was pulled under by the strong currents on the Green River.

The man's father jumped in, and managed to get hold of his son.  But the father had to let go when he was being pulled under, says West.

Two men were standing on the opposite side of the river bank, and jumped in.

West says they found the man in ten feet of water after about eight minutes of searching.  They pulled him out and immediately performed CPR on the man.

Medics took over performing CPR on the man, when they arrived.

The man was taken by medical helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was listed Monday night in critical condition.  Hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said on Tuesday that he died.
