Man in Lakewood attempted bank robbery charged with unrelated robbery, carjacking

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — A man accused of trying to rob a Bank of America in Lakewood but was shot by an armored car guard has been charged with two unrelated robberies.

Michael D. Winston II pleaded not guilty to the new charges Wednesday. His bail was set at $2 million.

Authorities said that on June 9, Winston approached a Loomis armored car guard who was servicing an ATM outside a bank at the 13800 block of Pacific Avenue.  Police said Winston pointed a gun at the guard and demanded his money bag, which turned out to be empty.

The guard identified Winston out of a photo lineup.

On Aug. 20, shortly before midnight, Winston robbed a man at gunpoint for his car at the South Hill Puyallup Walmart, according to police.

Police said Winston approached the victim, pointed a handgun in his face and demanded his vehicle.

Investigators said Winston and his wife used the stolen car in the attempted robbery at the Lakewood Bank of America on Sept. 15.

The car theft victim positively picked Winston out of a photo lineup as the man who took his car at gunpoint, police said.
