ANACORTES, Wash. — A woman died early Sunday morning after a fire at an Anacortes motel, fire officials said.
Multiple agencies responded to the Sunrise Inn Villas and Suites in the 900 block of 20th Street for a fire alarm.
When firefighters arrived, a fire was burning in one of the units.
Firefighters forced entry into the unit and found an unresponsive woman.
CPR was performed on the woman and she was taken to Island Hospital.
Fire officials said the woman died at the hospital.
According to the Anacortes Fire Department, the cause of the fire was determined to be combustibles that had been placed too close to a natural gas fireplace.
On Wednesday, the fire department posted a video of the aftermath of the fire scene with this message:
"The purpose of this video is to educate the public on the dangers of home fires and a reminder of simple steps that prevent home fire deaths."
The fire was contained to one unit and damages were estimated to be around $50,000.
