Wildfire started by lightning burning in Washington state's Glacier Peak Wilderness

GLACIER PEAK WILDERNESS — A wildfire is burning in Washington state’s Glacier Peak wilderness area.

The fire, deemed Buck Creek Fire, has resulted in closures, including the Buck Creek Trail No. 1513, the Chiwawa River Trail No. 1550, the Phelps Creek Trail No. 1511 and the Carne Mountain Trail No. 1508. The Phelps Creek Campground and Forest Road 6200 north of Alpine Meadows Campground is also closed.

The fire is burning an estimated 1,073 acres. Officials say the fire was started by lightning on July 22 and has since burned within the Glacier Peak Wilderness area.

“As of Saturday morning, the Buck Creek Fire's southern-most perimeter was one-and-a-quarter mile north of the historic mining site of Trinity. Crews have already been at work there in preparation to protect structures and resources at that site,” officials wrote Saturday.
