Dog lovers in Washington are sharing their appreciation for a local dog company that has been giving our injured four-legged friends a new set of wheels for more than 50 years.

K9 Carts operates from a small office on Whidbey Island – giving pets who have lost the use of their legs a renewed mobility.

The Whidbey News Times report that owner Barbara Parkes was doing administrative work for an animal hospital before starting her company. She said the company is the first of its kind in the United States, and because it has 40 years of experience, it is are able to stay ahead of the competition.

"It's not just about selling a product, it's about caring for the pets and the owners," Parkes told the Whidbey News Times. "I almost think it's not a business per se, but a way for me to improve the lives of pets."

The company also makes wheelchairs for cats, mini-horses and other pets.

In addition to selling the chairs – which cost from $225 to $500 – the company also donates to local groups.

The Seattle Dog Spot wrote on its website that it gives  wheelchairs to dog rescues such as Valhalla Rescue, which got three dog wheelchairs from K9 Carts in 2012.
