SEATTLE — A man who was trying to retrieve his stolen tool kit from the back of a pickup took a wild and unexpected ride in West Seattle.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on June 12, the victim was working on a house in the 7900 block of 34th Avenue Southwest when a red Chevrolet pickup pulled up.
Seattle police said a man got out of the truck, grabbed a rotary hammer toolkit from the back of the victim’s truck, put it in the bed of the Chevrolet truck and got back behind the wheel.
When the victim, who had been watching the man, jumped into the bed of the thief’s running pickup to get his toolkit, the driver accelerated.
Police said the victim pleaded for the driver to stop, but instead, the man sped up and started swerving.

When the truck slowed down at 30th Avenue Southwest and Southwest Trenton Street to make a turn, the victim grabbed his toolkit and jumped from the bed of the moving truck.
Police said the victim was hurt when he hit the ground. He was taken to a hospital with a possible broken ankle, head injury and knee abrasions.
Officers searched the area for the truck, but it was not found.
