Trooper exchanges gunfire with pedestrian near Chehalis

CHEHALIS, Wash. — A woman who was walking on I-5 near Chehalis Tuesday night exchanged gunfire with a Washington State Patrol trooper.

About 8:45 p.m., a trooper working the Chehalis area saw a pedestrian along southbound Interstate 5, got out of his patrol vehicle, and tried to speak with her.

During the contact, gunfire was exchanged between the woman and the trooper, WSP said.

The trooper took cover behind his patrol vehicle, and other than minor scrapes, was not hurt.

The pedestrian was hit by gunfire and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The extent of her injuries is not known.

The freeway was closed for six hours while officers investigated.

The Region 3 Critical Investigation Team is handling the investigation.
