Suspect found dead in apartment after shootout with Federal Way police

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — A man who shot his sister was found dead after an exchange of gunfire with Federal Way police Sunday evening, according to officers.

At 6:25 a.m. on Sunday, officers were called to reports of a shooting at the Park at Dashpoint Apartments on 50th Lane Southwest. Officers arrived and found that a man had shot his sister when she arrived at his apartment to check on his well-being.

She had serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Francis Hospital by friends before officers arrived.

As officers evacuated neighbors at the apartment complex, the man fired more shots from inside his apartment. He then came to a window and shot at officers, who returned gunfire, police said.

It is not yet known if the suspect was hit by that gunfire, but when the man didn’t respond to officers’ attempts to speak to him, SWAT officers entered the apartment and found that the man inside was unresponsive. Officers gave him aid until medics arrived and pronounced him dead.

No officers were hurt.

The two officers who fired gunshots will be placed on administrative leave during an investigation by the Valley Independent Investigative Team, a multi-agency team comprising investigators from seven South King County police departments — Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Port of Seattle and Tukwila.

As the incident involved the Federal Way Police Department, staff from that department will not be involved in the investigation.
