The Washington State Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced the contractor that will tear down the Alaskan Way Viaduct after a new tunnel opens to replace it.
WSDOT says Kiewit plans to tear down the viaduct and fill in the Battery Street Tunnel for $93.7 million, making it the contractor offering the state the best apparent value.
Once the contract is officially awarded in a few weeks, it will be up to Kiewit to figure out exactly how to deconstruct the earthquake-vulnerable structure.
The state has mandated that the work be done in less than nine months and that at least one lane of traffic be open in each direction on Alaskan Way.
No cross street can be closed for more than 30 days at a time.
The state says the new tunnel could open as early as October but the bulk of the viaduct demolition will happen in 2019.
State Route 99 will close for up to three weeks before the new tunnel opens while crews realign the roadway.
