Snohomish County offers number to call to report firework use

While dozens of fireworks stands were permitted to open throughout Snohomish County Wednesday, the county also encouraged people to report the use of fireworks in the ten cities where they’re completely banned.

Snohomish county turned their non-emergency dispatch numbers into fireworks reporting hotlines where police and county deputies will be alerted to reckless and illegal use of fireworks.

Kris Shopin of Everett was among the vocal supporters of the fireworks hotlines. On July 4 2009, her family’s home burned down the basement after a burning rocket landed on the roof.

Shopin says the person who fired the rocket was never caught. It took more than a year to remove the scorched ruins  and rebuild the house. On the same night, Snohomish County Fire Marshals ruled two other devastating fires within a few miles of the Shopin’s home were also caused by fireworks.

“I would ban them all unless it was a safe dedicated area that someone was there with controls if something went wrong,” said Shopin. “it just takes a little bit of a shift (of wind) and you're in trouble."

Shopin says that night her family learned that lighting a single fuse can torch a lifetime of memories.

“We will stand on guard on the fourth,” she said. “We have hoses out, we walk the neighborhood, and we will definitely be sure we will use that number. That's great."

State law allows fireworks sales and use between June 28 and July 5, but cities can adopt their own ordinances.

To report use or sales of fireworks in banned areas:

In a tweet, the county shared that anyone who would like to report use in Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo and Woodway -- which are cities that have banned both the sales and discharge of fireworks --  could call the non-emergency number 425-775-3000. For the rest of Snohomish County, people can call 425-407-3999.
