Seattle Storm head coach Dan Hughes to rejoin team Friday

SEATTLE — Seattle Storm head coach Dan Hughes will return to the sidelines on Friday, only two months after he announced he had been diagnosed with cancer, the team announced Wednesday.

On May 14, Hughes underwent successful surgery at Swedish First Hill Campus in Seattle to remove a carcinoid tumor in his digestive tract.

Hughes is scheduled to hold a news conference on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. to discuss his recovery and returning to the sidelines. Watch live coverage here.

“I am thankful for the entire Swedish medical team’s exceptional care throughout this process,” Hughes said in a news release.

“I am also grateful to Gary Kloppenburg and the Storm coaching staff who guided our team through a grueling stretch of the schedule with finesse. Our team has demonstrated incredible resilience and we will continue to fight each and every game.”

Hughes, 64, helped lead the Storm to a league-best 26-8 record and a WNBA Championship in his first year as head coach in 2018.

The Storm are currently in second place in the Western Conference with a 5-4 record and will host the Los Angeles Sparks at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
