Seattle power outage sends pregnant woman on 49-floor trek

SEATTLE — Inside Seattle's Columbia Tower, there were tense moments when the lights went out.

“Unfortunately the world we live in today makes you worried about what could possibly be happening,” said Kelly Valenzuela.

Valenzuela and her friend Colleen Richen had just arrived on the 49th floor. Richen is nine months pregnant.

“I had just come in and towards my due date and I had come in to wrap up a few things for work and the power went out right before a got here,” she said.

She didn't want to wait possibly two hours for the power to come back, so they walked all the way down.

"We took it very slowly and I had a whole entourage of people walking in front of me and behind me we just took it nice and easy," she said. "Good exercise, I got my steps in for the day."

Others say the evacuation was orderly. ”We have drills quarterly so everyone is prepared,” said Gary Gant

Dan Ogborn was at the 40th floor Starbucks.

“We got up there, there were about 3 minutes all of a sudden the lights go out. They start giving us emergency messages over the PA system,” he said.

Dan has a broken leg. He waited an hour for the power to come back on so he could take an elevator down.

“The thing is, when the power goes out in a Starbucks, everything’s free.”
