If Kris Fowler is still hiking in the woods near White Pass he may be encountering some difficult conditions.
The 31-year-old from Ohio began hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in Southern California on Mother's Day weekend. His goal was to make it all the way to Canada.
“He made his way 2,200 miles this far,” his stepmother Sally Fowler said. “He was actually hoping to finish the end of September.”
According to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, Fowler was first seen in Packwood around October 10th and was found squatting in a trailer wearing sandals and said he was cold.
He left two days later telling people he was determined to keep going. He hasn't been seen since. A Facebook page has been started to post tips on Fowler's whereabouts.
Sally Fowler has come to Packwood from Ohio to search for her stepson.
“We just want him to come home,” Fowler said. “I just hope he walks out and says what the heck are you doing mom? What’s all the fuss?”
Kimberly Lamontagne owns the Packwood Inn where Fowler came looking for work while he was in town. Lamontagne is helping Fowler's family, giving them free rooms at her inn, and organizing volunteer searches in the mountains.
She’s focusing on the White Pass area while a Yakima based search and rescue team scours other sections of the trail.
“They pinged his phone and as far as the ping is concerned it hasn’t left White Pass, so we’re going to concentrate on this area while Yakima is concentrating somewhere else,” said Lamontagne.
