Police looking for suspects after truck stolen in Tumwater with baby inside; child safe

TUMWATER. Wash. — Tumwater police are looking for a man who stole a truck with only a sleeping baby inside.

Police said the 10-month-old boy’s parents had gone into a Chevron gas station at 670 Trosper Road SW on Tuesday when their truck, which was in front of the gas pumps, was stolen at 11:48 p.m.

The suspect had been a passenger in a car at an adjacent gas pump.

A man who was driving that car, which also had a woman passenger inside, also fled the parking lot when the suspect drove away in the truck.

Because the victim’s phone was inside the truck, an emergency dispatcher was able to contact the service provider to track its location.

The baby was found inside the truck, unhurt and still in his car seat, Tumwater police said.

A K-9 unit from the Olympia Police Department searched for the suspect, but did not find him.

Police said they believe the man was picked up by someone after he abandoned the truck.

Investigators said the kidnapping and theft were recorded by surveillance cameras, and police have video of the two male suspects and their car.

The first suspect, who was seen driving away in the truck, is a white man in his 30s with a medium build who is balding, with dark hair around the back of his head. He was wearing black pants, dark shoes, a face mask and an orange, yellow and black hooded sweatshirt.

The second suspect, who was driving the car at the gas station, is a white man in his 20s to 30s with a thin build and dark hair. He was wearing a red jacket, black shorts, black leggings, a black mask, light-colored shoes and a beige bucket hat.

Police said a woman was also in the car at the time of the kidnapping and theft.

The suspects’ car is a red, early 2000s four-door Toyota Echo, with no hubcaps on the passenger-side tires.

Tumwater police say they have probable cause to arrest the first man for first-degree kidnapping and theft.

Anyone with information about the identity of the men or their whereabouts is requested to call the Tumwater Police Department at 360-754-4200 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) and reference case #2022-00443.
