‘Operation Wedding Gown’ includes COVID-19 frontline workers in free wedding dress giveaway

SEATTLE — For bride-to-be Skyler Means, shopping and finding her wedding dress is a moment she won’t soon forget.

“I’m active duty Air Force and I thought what an opportunity, to first of all come to Seattle, I’m stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah,” explained Means.

And lucky for the First Lieutenant, getting her dream dress at Brides for a Cause in Seattle’s Roosevelt neighborhood won’t cost her a penny. The bridal boutique, which raises money for charity, has teamed up, for the 6th year, with Brides Across America’s “Operation Wedding Gown.” The mission: to give free wedding dresses to those in the military and first responders. But this year’s mission is even bigger.

“The most special part about this event is that we’ve opened it up to even more people,” said Meghan Murphy, manager for Brides for a Cause in Seattle.

Hospital workers on the frontlines of the pandemic have been added to the list.

“It’s very exciting. I think we’ve all really obviously been in this together to see how important those people are and helping us with it so it’s nice being able to give back in a way that we can with a free dress,” added Murphy.

“I think it’s great. Anyone who puts their life on the line to protect the people of this country. I think that’s a great opportunity for them and I was even more excited when I heard they were offering it to people on the front line of this crisis, too,” said Means.

As for Means, after a mere 40 minutes, she did say “yes to the dress.”

“It was amazing, it was easy, fun. I felt very safe and I’m just really glad they could open and still provide this experience for me today,” said Means.

Brides for a Cause also has stores in Tacoma and Portland. Most of the dresses at the shop are sample dresses donated from other bridal boutiques. Some brides have also donated their dresses there. The store is open year round to the public and proceeds are then donated to other charities.

Brides across America teams up with more than 60 bridal boutiques across the country. Operation Wedding Gown happens twice a year. The next free dress event is in November. For more information on dates and how to register, click on this link.
