The Bethel School Board voted unanimously Monday night to name it’s newest elementary school after NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson.

"We are thrilled to announce that our newest school will honor a true American hero who represents the passion, knowledge, and bravery we strive to instill in all Bethel students. The Bethel School Board voted unanimously to christen our eighteenth elementary school Katherine G. Johnson Elementary," a press release from the board read.

Johnson calculated the flight paths for spacecrafts for over three decades for NASA, including the 1969 Apollo 11 mission.

Her life and work on that mission were celebrated in the 2016 movie "Hidden Figures."

The school is currently under construction and scheduled to open in fall 2021.
