Kirkland woman dealing with 'bat infestation' in her home, attorney for landlord responds

KIRKLAND, Wash. — A woman in Kirkland says she's dealing with a "bat infestation" in her town home.

Genele Edey is especially concerned after King County issued a public health warning when two rabid bats were spotted in the Seattle area recently.

Edey said a few weeks after she moved in that she started seeing bat droppings on her balcony and then she started seeing bats on the outside of her town home.

Then one night in May a bat flew into her bedroom as she was lying in bed.

“Being in bed and all of the sudden, right past my TV and down the hall,” Edey said. “I was so freaked out I can’t even go out of my bedroom and look at it”.

Edey said it took several hours for her and her daughter to get the bat out.

“It’s costly, but I want it fixed," Edey said.

Edey is concerned for her family's health after 2 rabid bats were found this month, one in Green Lake and the other in Ballard.

King County Health officials sent out a warning for people to see a doctor if they have been bitten or scratched by potentially-infected bats.

The attorney for her landlord told KIRO 7 solving this problem is a lot more complicated than it might seem. He says the building H-O-A has met with a biologist from Fish and Wildlife on how to remove the bats, but the agency told them there are restrictions on how and when you can do that.

They are hoping that a roofing project next weekend will scare them away, and he says from the start they have offered to terminate Edey's lease with no penalty.
