SEATTLE — Seattle firefighters battled flames at an apartment building in Fremont early Friday.

At 4:30 a.m., dispatchers started receiving calls about heavy smoke coming from a two-story apartment building in the 3600 block of Woodland Park Avenue North.

The first crews to arrive saw flames and smoke coming from the front-left side of the building’s first and second floors, according to Seattle Fire Department spokesman David Cuerpo.

Firefighters evacuated the building and then went up to the second floor, but confirmed the source of the fire was directly below them.

Other crews entered an apartment on the first floor and began to fight the flames.

A short time later, firefighters said the first-floor ceiling and stairwell were starting to burn up through the second floor.

Firefighters were able to put out the main part of the fire within 20 minutes and began putting out hot spots inside the walls, ceiling and void spaces.

Cuerpo said the fire was completely out by 5:27 a.m.

No one was hurt.

The cause has not yet been determined.

The Red Cross is helping the residents who were displaced.
