ARLINGTON, Wash. — A young fawn is recovering at a wildlife refuge in Arlington after he was found collapsed on the side of the road by a Seattle police homicide detective late last month.
Detective Tom Mooney found the orphaned deer, who appeared to be in bad shape, and rushed him to the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center.
Staff at the center worked to get the fawn to take a bottle and nursed him back to health.
In a tribute to the officer perhaps, the fawn was named Blue.
On a May 29 post on their website, Sarvey said they currently were caring for five orphaned fawns, including the one found by the SPD detective.
Another of those five fawns was rescued by the Lake Stevens Police Department after its mother was killed when she was hit by a car.
Sarvey said the fawns are first taught to take a bottle, then use a bottle rack and have little to no contact with wildlife staff in an effort to keep the animals wary of humans.
Sarvey accepts orphaned and hurt wildlife patients from King, Snohomish and Skagit counties, as well as Camano Island.
