SEATTLE — America is remembering civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday.
After racial and civil inequities were highlighted throughout 2020 during national protests and the presidential election, his words and sermons will ring louder than ever for many this year.
Seattle’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration march, “Good Trouble Necessary Trouble,” will be held for its 39th year. It will meet at the Garfield High School front parking lot with a rally at 11 a.m. The march begins at noon. Participants are asked to wear a mask, bring hand sanitizer, consider wearing eye protection and maintain social distancing. (400 23rd Avenue, Seattle).
Most other events are virtual.
The First Presbyterian Church in Everett will begin their MLK Day event at 11 a.m. It will be livestreamed on Facebook Live and the Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee website.
The City of Bellingham is holding an event from noon to 1 p.m. featuring music by Kulshan Chorus, blessing by Lummi tribal member Darrell Hillaire and Children of the Setting Sun, remarks by Bellingham author and celebration founder Dr. Clyde Ford and Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood, and selections from Dr. King’s speeches presented in his own words. The Northwest African American Museum’s virtual programming runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on its YouTube channel. There will be a keynote speaker along with musical performances and children’s book readings. The keynote program begins at 1 p.m.
The theme for Tacoma’s 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration is Collective Voices/Collective Hope.” The pre-recorded program will feature local performers and speakers. The program starts at 8 p.m. and can be viewed online and streamed live on Facebook. It will also be played on TV Tacoma which is carried on both the Click! (via Rainier Connect) and Comcast Cable systems.

Lift Every Voice Legacy, in partnership with Communities of Color Coalition, is holding the virtual event “Becoming Brave” - A tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It will feature music, spoken word and dance from noon to 1 p.m. Register free here. https://beloved4all.org/
The U.S. Forest Service is encouraging people to get outside Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day by making Monday a fee-free day at state parks. The fee waiver includes many boat launches, picnic areas and visitor centers.
