Coyote spotted in lower Queen Anne

SEATTLE — A woman was walking her dog Tuesday in lower Queen Anne when she spotted a coyote lying in the grass near a neighbor’s home.

The coyote, seen near the corner of 12th Avenue West and Gilman Road, appeared to take notice and watched the pair.

According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, there have been no known coyote attacks on humans in Washington since 2006 when two coyotes bit two children in Bellevue.

The WDFW suggests that most conflicts by coyotes are caused by feeding the coyotes, either on purpose or inadvertently by providing access to food such as garbage or pet food, which causes coyotes to lose their fear of humans and become more aggressive.

While they are not considered game animals, a license is required to hunt or trap them; however, if they are damaging crops or animals, a property owner has permission to kill or trap the coyote.
