9-year-old girl attacked by cougar in Stevens County

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating after a 9-year-old girl who was attending a camp near Fruitland in Stevens County was attacked by a cougar Saturday morning.

The girl was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries.

The cougar was killed at the scene. According to WDFW, the cougar was a sub-adult between one and two years old.

The department plans to have the carcass tested to see if it may have had rabies, and also check the cougar’s overall health to try and determine why it attacked.

WDFW also says there was a recent sighting of a cougar in March about 10 minutes away from the site of Saturday’s attack.
