Dino Rossi, Kim Schrier leading 8th Congressional District race

Early results for the primary election came in on Tuesday night and Dino Rossi and Kim Schrier are leading the 8th Congressional District race.

In a closely watched open congressional race in the state, Republican Dino Rossi was leading on a crowded ballot as he looks to advance to November. Rossi is a former state senator who had unsuccessful runs for governor and U.S. Senate.

Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert is retiring from the 8th Congressional District after more than a decade.

Among the dozen candidates on the ballot, one of three Democrats are expected to advance: pediatrician Kim Schrier, attorney Jason Rittereiser, or former federal public-health official Shannon Hader. Schrier took an early lead among the group for the second spot, followed closely by Rittereiser.

Volunteers spent the afternoon calling for Republican Dino Rossi. His past runs for governor, Legislature and U.S. Senate make him the clear front-runner.

"I have 11 opponents, so this is going to get split up quite a lot, I think probably in the low 40's we'll be fine," when asked about his prospects on election night.

If as expected, Dino Rossi emerges as the leading Republican, he'll face one of three strong Democrats.

Shannon Hader is a medical doctor who ran the global infectious disease program for the CDC.

"I never rest on any laurels or assumptions. Certainly, the race has been going really, really well. But I've made sure in this last burst, as ballots have dropped, we're not stopping at all,” she said.

Jason Rittereiser is a former King County prosecutor.

"People are energized. I think if there is any benefit to the Trump administration it’s that we've seen activism rising up from the grassroots level that I think we haven't seen in this district before."

Kim Schrier is pediatrician.

"I'm just knocking (on) doors, talking to lots of voters. Are voters even paying attention, it's the middle of vacation season? Voters are paying attention, voters are definitely paying attention.
