An 8-year-old boy suffered a 'suspicious injury' while at a park in Renton on Memorial Day, according to police. He is currently in critical but stable condition.

The injury appears to not be related to the shootings at Pritchard Island Beach Park on the same day.

Riverview Park is located in the 3200 block of Maple Leaf Highway. The child was preparing to leave with his parents at about 6:15 p.m. when his mother noticed him acting abnormally and found a wound on the boy's side.

The family took him to Overlake Hospital, where Bellevue police were contacted after staff believed the wound was caused by gunfire.

The boy was later transferred to Harborview Medical Center.

The mother told Renton police that she heard a "pop" that she had assumed was fireworks, before noticing her son's injury.

There were no reports of gunfire in the area at that time.

Investigators are working with hospital staff to determine if the wound was caused by gunfire or by some other projectile such as an air gun.

Renton police are asking for the public's help in identifying any information related to the incident.
