3 taken into custody after Beaver Lake Park homicide

DES MOINES, Wash. — Two people were in custody Saturday in connection with the Beaver Lake Park homicide from earlier in the week. A third person, a 23-year-old Renton woman, was also arrested, officials said Sunday.

The son of a veteran Seattle police officer was run over and killed after confronting a car prowler Wednesday at a Sammamish park, police said.

Authorities responded to a report of a shooting at Beaver Lake Park in the 2500 block of 244th Avenue Southeast at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Deputies said a man and his girlfriend were walking their dog when they found a person breaking into their vehicle. The man ran to his car and confronted the suspect.

According to deputies, the suspect got into a tan or gold SUV and and tried to run him over. The man then started shooting at the suspect and vehicle, deputies said. Deputies said the suspect vehicle ran over the man after shots were fired. The man died at the scene.

Police received information that a person of interest related to the Beaver Lake Park homicide was in an apartment along 29th Avenue South in Des Moines Friday night.

When they arrived, officers said the suspect and another man saw them and pulled out handguns. Officers struck one of the men. That man was in critical condition at Harborview. Hospital officials said Saturday afternoon that he had died.

The second man fled the area but was eventually located hiding in a nearby apartment. He, a 16-year-old from Kent, has been taken into custody.

A third person, the 23-year-old woman, was taken into custody at a house in Skyway around noon on Saturday.

Deputies are investigating the shooting.

At about 11 p.m. Friday, crews were at the scene near South 216th Street and 29th Avenue South.
