$1 fare for ORCA LIFT riders starts March 1

SEATTLE — Starting March 1, transit riders eligible for an ORCA LIFT card will only have to pay $1 for one-way trips across most of the Puget Sound region.

“A person’s income should never be a barrier to traveling and accessing opportunities,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine in a news release. “By formally adopting the $1 ORCA LIFT fare, we continue to reduce cost burdens for transit-dependent riders. This change helps individual riders while contributing to healthier and stronger communities.”

King County Metro, Sound Transit, Everett Transit, Community Transit and Kitsap Transit are among the transit agencies that offer the $1 one-way fare for most services. Pierce Transit plans to start charging the reduced $1 fares on April 1.

ORCA LIFT cards are available to qualifying low-income households. Seniors and those with disabilities also qualify for reduced fares.

This new fare is expected to cost Sound Transit $25 million through 2046.

Transit agencies across Puget Sound also began providing free rides for young people ages 18 and under beginning last summer.
