Komen 3-Day walk for breast cancer kicks off at Seattle Center

SEATTLE — Hundreds of breast cancer survivors, their friends and families were decked out in pink under the Space Needle Friday morning to kick off the annual Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk.

This year, Seattle is the fourth stop on the schedule, followed by walks in Philadelphia, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Diego.

The walkers will cover 60 miles this weekend.

KIRO 7 Morning News co-anchor and breast cancer survivor Michelle Millman helped kick off the event at Seattle Center at 7 a.m.  She'll walk nearly 20 miles on Sunday.

This year marks 10 years since Millman's diagnosis.

Participants will walk to Redmond for the first day.

Walkers will cover about 20 miles a day.  The route has pit stops with snacks, drinks and toilets, and walkers will camp in tents overnight.  There is also medical support along the route and in camp.

Every walker raised at least $2,300 to help raise awareness for breast cancer and for research for a cure.

Since the walks across the country started in 2003, they have raised over $848 million.
