Jury in Monfort trial shown graphic images of murder scene

SEATTLE, Wash. — Detectives and the King County medical examiner testified Thursday in the murder trial of Christopher Monfort, charged with killing Seattle Police Officer Timothy Brenton in 2009.

During the medical examiner's testimony, jurors saw photos from the night of Brenton's death, Oct. 31, 2009. They saw photos of Brenton sitting in the passenger seat of his patrol car after he was shot.

One photo showed Brenton with a coffee cup fallen by his side.

Some friends and family members sitting in the audience looked away as jurors saw gunshot wounds to Brenton's arm and head.

"These were firearm injuries, features consistent with a high-powered firearm," said Dr. Richard Harruff, the King County medical examiner.

Harruff also described seeing blood and bone fragments on the scene.

As Monfort left the courtroom Thursday, he told KIRO 7, "When police continue to operate with brutality, they force the citizen's hand."

A key witness, Officer Britt Sweeney, is expected to testify Tuesday. Sweeney was Brenton's student officer at the time and survived the shooting.
