JBLM soldier faces long list of charges after shooting, crime spree

LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Joint Base Lewis McChord soldier Jesse Suhanec faces a long list of charges after a shooting and crime spree in Lakewood that left one man wounded by gunfire.

Police said the 22-year-old Suhanec was trying to steal a truck from Kevin Anthony Thursday morning when he shot the 30-year-old Anthony several times, hitting him in the shoulder and head.

Anthony's brother spoke with KIRO 7 the day after that incident.

"He's, I know he'll be all right. It's going to take more than a cowardly act to keep my brother down," said Reggie Christor.

According to a probable cause affidavit,  Suhanec has armory privileges at Joint Base Lewis McChord and "went to the armory Thursday morning to inspect a specific 9 millimeter handgun that belongs to another soldier."

Police said that same gun, which is privately owned and not issued by the Army, was used to shoot Anthony and threaten several other people.

The violent crime spree sparked a massive manhunt that dragged on for several hours. The affidavit stated Suhanec,  an Army Ranger with a specialist's rank, spent hours evading capture by dumping his clothes and covering himself in mud to avoid being found by a police K-9 searching the area for him.

He surrendered after going to a home near the shooting scene because he could no longer stand the cold.

Suhanec pleaded not guilty to charges of first- and second-degree assault, attempted robbery and attempted burglary.

He was ordered held on $1 million bail.
