Health officials give tips to keep rats out of toilets

SEATTLE — It's a sight no one wants to see, but health officials get about 15 calls a year because of live rats in people's toilets.

It typically happens in the fall when there's an increase in reproduction.

Rats live wherever they can find food, and sometimes that's in drains.

KIRO 7 asked King County Public Health for tips on what to do to make sure rats don’t make a surprise appearance.

Officials said to keep your kitchen sinks rinsed clean, never throw grease down the drain and keep your toilet lid down when not in use.

If you find a rat, flush it.
