Central District house fire ruled arson

SEATTLE — A fire that broke out at a Central District home early Saturday morning has been ruled as arson, according to Seattle Fire Department.

The incident happened before 3 a.m. on 23rd Avenue and Alder Street, which is located right next to Garfield High School.

According to the Seattle Fire Department’s public information officer Kyle Moore, the fire was in a single, back bedroom.

Firefighters contained the fire within 14 minutes.

Fire investigators said an incendiary device caught the room on fire.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Alison Grande spoke with neighbors that said the incident is the second time in two days.

Omar Glover hurt himself trying to help the woman who lived inside of the home.

“They threw the rock into this window, right here. Right after they threw the rock they threw the firework,” said Glover.

The window that was damaged was the same window of a bedroom where an 8-year-old boy sleeps.

“The bed is right next to the window,” Glover said.

According to other residents in the neighborhood, the same room of the house was targeted two nights in a row.

“This is the second time somebody did this,” said Glover. “It was a firework. Like one of those big ones you see in the sky if they blow up, they broke the window with a rock and threw it in there.”

According to Glover, the woman who lived inside of the home got out on her own, and her son and the 8-year-old boy were at a different location Friday night.

“Makes me uncomfortable, very uncomfortable,” said another neighbor, Sarah. “They could have killed somebody.”

No injuries were reported, and the Red Cross arrived to the location to provide assistance.

The damages were estimated at $40,000 to the structure and $8,000 to the contents.

The Seattle Police Department’s Arson Bomb Squad is currently investigating the fire.

Investigators have posted an arson sign on the house offering a $10,000 reward looking for information.
