BELLEVUE, Wash. — Bellevue Square is bucking the trend of malls nationwide.
While many are shutting down, the 72-year-old shopping center is announcing a major expansion.
Within the next 12 months, groundbreaking is set to begin on the southeast corner of the mall.
The plan is build two new towers that will house both a five-star hotel and luxury apartments.
There will also be some 200,000 square feet of retail plus multiple restaurants.
The developer, Kemper Freeman, said it’s all part of giving the people in this area more than just a shopping mall.
“The market is still very strong so we are going to continue to build the things the market tells us they want,” said Freeman.
The Bellevue Square expansion comes more than a year after the opening of Lincoln Square South, a $1 billion project.
There is no word yet on the final price tag for the expansion, but it's expected to be completed within the next four years.
