Coast Guard evacuates sick woman from cruise ship northwest of Neah Bay

SEATTLE — The Coast Guard evacuated a 72-year-old woman who was suffering stroke-like symptoms off a cruise ship 17 miles northwest of Neah Bay Monday.

The Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound received a call at 11 p.m. Sunday from the Norwegian Pearl saying a woman needed to be taken off the ship to receive treatment.

The Coast Guard’s duty flight surgeon and the Norwegian Pearl's doctor spoke and agreed the woman should be removed from the ship, as the next port of call for Norwegian Pearl was in two days.

A crew from Neah Bay launched a 47-foot rescue boat and arrived at the ship at 12:40 a.m. to transfer the patient off the Norwegian Pearl.

The patient was taken to Coast Guard Station Neah Bay, where she was then transferred to an Air Station Port Angeles helicopter and airlifted to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles.

Her condition is not known.
