Climber survives fall on Mount Hood

PORTLAND, Ore. — A climber is alive after a fall of about 500 feet on a popular route to the summit of Mount Hood.

Authorities said Thursday he suffered a serious leg or hip injury and it would take several hours to get him off the mountain.

The Clackamas County sheriff's office identified him as 52-year-old Gary Morgan but said his hometown isn't yet known. The sheriff's office said he was climbing alone.

He fell in the same area of the mountain where a climber died in a 1,000-foot fall last week. It's known as the Hogsback, near the summit on the south side of the mountain.

That was the second climbing death of the year on the peak rising 11,239 feet in the Cascade Range 50 miles east of Portland.
