SEATTLE — The owner of a Seattle pool popular for kids' swimming lessons is now reviewing her policies after a 6-year-old girl nearly drowned.
Kerrie Gordon, who owns Safe 'N' Sound swimming on Lake Union, said it happened around 9:20 a.m. Monday during a swimming camp.
It was another student who spotted the little girl starting to go under in the deep end and alerted a counselor.
Staff dove in to pull the little girl from the bottom of the pool.
Instructor Noah Duffy performed CPR.
"She was unresponsive," he said. "She was blue and she showed signs of shock. She was clenched, and she had no heart rate."
Then the little girl began coughing up water and breathing. Gordon said she was breathing normally by the time paramedics arrived, but they took her to Children's Hospital to get checked.
Gordon said about 15 kids were in or around the pool.
She said the little girl was supposed to be getting into the shallow end with four other students, but instead, she got past two counselors on deck, a lifeguard and five instructors in the water -- and hopped into the deep end.
"So you're trying to figure out how someone didn't see her going over to the deep end?" KIRO 7 asked.
"Yes," Gordon said. "Try to figure out where we would have had a breakdown, where we had somebody who could get into an area that they're not supposed to be in."
Gordon said since she opened the facility 27 years ago, she's never had to call the paramedics until now. She said a review of their policies is a priority.
Parent Deanna Dukes, who was dropping off her kids for camp when the rescue occurred, said she feels confident about the camp's response. "I feel shaken up but, you know, confident," she said.
The Public Health Department could not provide all 27 years of inspection reports from the facility but sent KIRO 7 the last three reports since June 2012.
None found any safety issues. Health officials said they will be investigating this incident.
