BREMERTON, Wash. — The Bremerton Police Department has determined the cause of the Motel 6 gas explosion on August 8th.
Investigators say that a man stepped on a gas meter while stepping out of a window, which led to the gas leak that caused the explosion.

The man took his step-daughter to the motel after a family dispute so that she could be separated from her mother. When the step-daughter’s mother showed up at the motel, the step-father stepped on a gas meter to help the step-daughter out of the second story window. He admitted to hearing a loud hissing sound after stepping on the meter, but says he, his step-daughter, and another man left the scene shortly thereafter.
A motel manager and several others noticed the hissing sound, and began evacuation a short while later. Just one person was injured in the explosion that blew out several rooms in the motel.
The names of the people involved in the gas leak are not being released. The investigation is ongoing, and the possibility of criminal charges is unclear at this time.
