Boeing delivering first 787(s) to Japan Airlines

EVERETT, Wash. — Japan Airlines today takes delivery of at least one Boeing 787, the first new Dreamliner delivered to the key Boeing customer.

The plane, tail number JA822J, will be the first to be flown regularly to and from the U.S., the first to be used on a brand new route and the first to be powered by General Electric's new generation GEnX engines.

FlightBlogger Jon Ostrower reported that Japan Airlines might fly away with two Boeing 787s after a ceremony at Paine Field in Everett.

"There are strong indications that JAL will not take delivery of not one, but two 787s," Ostrower wrote.

JAL will be flying the plane between Tokyo and Boston -- a route that makes use of the plane's range, exceptionally long for a plane that's smaller than a Boeing 777 or a 747, said KIRO 7 Eyewitness News aviation reporter Rick Price.

A 9:30 a.m. news conference with Japan Airlines' president kicks off the ceremonies.
