Fire sinks boats at Anacortes Marina

ANACORTES, Wash. — Two power boats sank and another power boat and a sailboat were damaged in a fire Tuesday night at the Anacortes Marina.

Fire Chief Richard Curtis said no one was on board and no one was injured.

Curtis said the damaged boats -- 30 to 40 feet in length -- were most likely totaled, and the loss is likely to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Curtis said stand pipes on the docks gave firefighters quick access to water so they didn't have to lay hundreds of feet of hose. Standpipes are required by code at marinas in Anacortes, but not in many other areas in the Northwest.

Booms and absorbent pads were deployed. The state Ecology Department is monitoring the cleanup of as much as 150 gallons of fuel.

The fire happened on "E" dock.

A March 30 fire at Bellingham marina killed two people.
