SEATTLE — For the first time since the 26-24 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on New Year's Eve, Seahawks fans will be back in Centurylink Field as the team opens the 2018 season Thursday night with a preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Coming off a 9-7 season that started with Super Bowl expectations, the Seahawks are looking to return to the playoffs for the seventh time in nine years under head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider.

While the starters are not expected to play much, if at all, the first preseason game allows coaches and personnel evaluators the chance to identify talent that has become synonymous with Carroll and Schneider-led Seahawks teams.

Gone from last year’s team are late-round draft picks turned starters Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor.

However, Carroll has already addressed his excitement about the new, young core of Seahawks players who now have the chance to show they belong in the NFL, like Tre Flowers, Tedric Thompson and Shaquem Griffin, among others.

“(Flowers will) get a lot of work, and I’m really excited for him. He’s done a fantastic job. He’s really bought in. Now we need to see … how that plays into it when he deals with the challenges that come your way at corner. I’m real impressed with him so far,” Carroll said this week when asked about Flowers.
