Woman arrested in fatal Bremerton fire

EAST BREMERTON, Wash. — Deputies arrested a woman  Friday night in connection with a fatal fire in Bremerton last month.

Authorities arrested 45-year-old Shelly Margaret Arndt at her East Bremerton home after a month-long investigation.

According to police, 37-year-old Darcy Edward Veeder, Jr. was found dead inside of a home in the 6600 block of Wellington Lane Northeast after a fire on Feb. 23.

According to deputies, Veeder  and Arndt were in a long-term domestic relationship.

Veeder was one of eight people who were asleep at the home during the fire.

Seven people inside the home escaped the fire without injuries, but Veeder was found dead with a 3-year-old Saint Bernard next to him.

Investigators said the fire started in a downstairs family room.

“This fire was incendiary caused knowingly and willfully by human interaction. Adult guests in the home had both access to the downstairs area and methods of ignition,” said the fire marshal.

Arndt was booked into the Kitsap County Jail on charges of first-degree arson and second-degree murder. Her bail was set at $1 million.
