Vacant building gives homeless women, children temporary home

SEATTLE — Homeless women and children in Seattle will now have a place to sleep, thanks to a vacant building.

The city is letting Mary's Place use the building until it becomes a police precinct in 2017.

Mary's Place needs a new home because its lease is up.

“Everybody is working so hard to bring all these families inside. (It’s probably) the greatest gift you would ever want to get,” said Mary's Place Executive Director Marty Hartman.

Mary's Place will provide services for 80 people every night.

The group will only be responsible for paying the utilities and keeping the property in good shape.

"This is a great example of the City and the community coming together quickly to help a number of women and children who otherwise would have been forced to spend tonight without any shelter," Mayor Ed Murray told KIRO 7. "Thanks to the quick work by Mary's Place and the City, dozens of families will have a safe place to sleep tonight. But there is more to do, and I will continue to leverage our public resources to help our must vulnerable."
