MARION, Ind. — A substitute teacher is without a part-time gig and facing a public intoxication charge after co-workers suspected he showed up less than sober for work at an Indiana elementary school.
The Marion Police Department confirmed to WXIN that the principal at Kendall Elementary School asked an off-duty Marion police officer working security at the campus to check on the teacher after other instructors raised concerns about his behavior on Thursday.
The officer met with the teacher, identified as Shawn Spitler, and detected a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath,” WANE reported, citing the police report.
Spitler also displayed other signs of impairment and was given a portable breath test, WXIN reported.
According to the TV station, Indiana’s legal blood alcohol content level is 0.08%, and Spitler tested “higher than 0.10%.”
Public intoxication is a misdemeanor charge.
