Hyundai has added about 471,000 sport utility vehicles to its September U.S. recall for an electrical malfunction that places vehicles at risk for catching fire.
According to USA Today, the latest recall affects certain Tucson models produced between 2016 and 2018, as well as some 2020 and 2021 models.
The company has stated that the affected vehicles come equipped with antilock brake system computers capable of creating a short. Specifically, a brake fluid leak inside of a hydraulic control unit that operates the anti-lock brakes can potentially start a fire, and the company is urging drivers to leave their vehicles parked outdoors until the problem is repaired.
Tucsons equipped with Hyundai’s Smart Cruise Control feature are not being recalled, USA Today confirmed.
Hyundai said in a statement issued Friday that the latest recall comes as part of an ongoing investigation into the problem, and while dozens of fires have been reported, the company has received no reports of injuries related to the recalled vehicles.
The company stated that owners will be notified in late February to take their SUVs to a dealer, which will replace a fuse on the computer.
