Police: Phoenix woman suspected of DUI had baby girl in broken car seat

PHOENIX — An Arizona woman suspected of drunken driving crashed into a fence with a baby girl sitting in a broken car seat on the trunk of the vehicle, authorities said.

Sussan Lira, 33, of Phoenix, was charged with aggravated DUI and endangerment, KNXV reported.

According to authorities, police responded about 3:30 p.m. Monday and found Lira’s vehicle against a metal fence, KTVK reported.

Police said when they approached the car, they could smell alcohol and found two empty bottles in the vehicle, the television station reported.

Lira slurred her words and was unable to stand on her own, police said. She refused a breath test, KNXV reported.

According to police, a witness saw the crash and removed the car seat, the television station reported. The car seat was not restrained or buckled into the car at the time, KTVK reported. The child was wearing an old, dirty diaper, according to emergency crew members that responded to the scene.

The child was taken into custody by the state Department of Child Services, the television station reported.
