CANTON, Ohio — An Ohio couple is behind bars amid allegations that they kept a 7-year-old girl in a dog cage in their Canton home.
According to the Canton Repository and WHBC, U.S. Marshals arrested Derek Mayle, 30, and Lillian Cottrell, 29, on child endangerment charges Tuesday afternoon. They are being held without bond, the news outlets reported.
Authorities said the pair tortured and abused the child, a relative of Cottrell, from January to July 2019, according to the Repository. The couple is accused of locking the girl in a cage in the basement of their Fifth Street home, the newspaper reported.
Child welfare workers removed the girl, who weighed 28 pounds, and other children from the residence, prosecutors said.
