According to WLS and WMAQ, the incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday in a North Oak Park Avenue alley. The woman spotted the dresser and approached to get a closer look at the handles, thinking she might be able to recycle them, WLS reported. The baby was inside one of the drawers, along with a rosary, she said.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and rushed the newborn to a nearby hospital, where he remains in good condition, according to WLS.
The woman who found the child said she was angry that someone had left the child alone, but thankful that she was able to help.
“I’m just gonna focus on the miracle that I was there and that everybody showed up on time because I was shaking,” she told WMAQ. “I was shaking so bad.”
It was not immediately known whether the police had identified the baby’s parents or made any arrests in connection with the case.
