NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Tennessee zoo’s newest arrival has already made history.
According to WZTV, the Nashville Zoo announced Friday that it welcomed a baby spotted fanaloka – the first to be born in the U.S. – on April 29.
“CUTE ALERT! A brand-new zoo baby, from a species you’ve probably never heard of, is now visible at our veterinary center,” the zoo wrote of the male pup in a Facebook post.

The post, which described the spotted fanaloka as “a lesser-known small carnivore native to Madagascar,” added that the baby’s mother and father “recently arrived at the zoo and will be living behind the scenes.”
The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources considers spotted fanalokas vulnerable. The species’ population is decreasing, according to the organization’s website.
