Man killed by Brightline commuter train in South Florida

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A man attempting to cross railroad tracks in South Florida was killed Thursday night when he was struck by a high-speed commuter train, authorities said.

The incident occurred at a crossing in Hollywood, the Sun-Sentinel reported. The man attempted to cross the tracks as the Brightline train was coming, Hollywood Police Department Officer Christian Lata told the newspaper.

The fatality was the latest in a series of deaths involving Brightline trains.

On Dec. 30, 2021, two people were killed when their car collided with a Brightline train in Aventura as the driver tried to make it around the crossing gate.

Also in December, a 70-year-old pedestrian in Fort Lauderdale died after intentionally stepping in front of a train, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

On Jan. 13, two people were hospitalized after a Brightline train collided with an SUV in Miami, WSVN-TV reported.

Police are still investigating the incident, the Miami Herald reported.
