‘Glee’ actress Naya Rivera’s cause of death called accidental drowning, officials say

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. — The cause of death of “Glee” actress Naya Rivera was ruled an accidental drowning Tuesday, according to the Ventura County medical examiner.

The body of Rivera, 33, was recovered Monday in California’s Lake Piru.

Rivera disappeared Wednesday during a boat outing with her 4-year-old son, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The boy, Josey Hollis Dorsey, told investigators that his mother threw him back on the deck of their rented boat before she disappeared under the water. The boy was found asleep in a life vest on the drifting boat about three hours after the pair launched on Lake Piru, located northwest of Los Angeles.

Detectives said they found no indication of foul play or that Rivera’s death was a suicide, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said at a Monday news conference.

Rivera’s body was taken to the Ventura County medical examiner’s office, where an autopsy was performed and a positive identification was officially made using dental records, the Times reported. Officials found no signs of physical injury or evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved in Rivera’s death, the newspaper reported. However, officials did submit samples for toxicology tests.

According to KCBS and KNBC, Rivera rented a boat Wednesday afternoon and went swimming on the lake with her son, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said. The boy, who was wearing a life vest, was safely returned to the boat, but Rivera never did, deputies said.
