Brandon Alt was starting his day in Truckee, California, Monday when the car that was in front of him veered off the road, plunging into a nearby river.

Alt told CNN the woman who was driving had been having issues with controlling her vehicle.

“As I was following her she was weaving in and out of the lane. She almost hit two vehicles that were coming in the opposite direction,” Alt told CNN.

Police said the woman, who was not identified, was distracted as she going to call a family member to sing “Happy Birthday.”

Alt saw the crash happened, pulled over his SUV and went down the embankment into five-feet of icy water. He helped the woman get out of the car and to the shore, calling 911.

“I pulled over, scaled down the dirt cliff down to the river. I felt obligated. I was the only one on the road that saw the accident. I had to do something,” Alt told KOVR.

He said it was snowing and about 30 degrees at the time, Officer Jacob Williams told CNN.

The woman had minor injuries, KOVR reported.

After police arrived, Alt told them what happened, then went to his delivery route, wearing the wet clothes throughout the day.

By the end of the day his pants had dried, but his socks and boots were wet from the rescue, CNN reported.
